Breaking baking boundaries for more than 80 years, and counting

Cottage Lane was born from fourth-generation family bakery Breadcraft in rural New Zealand (Masterton, Wairarapa). Since our first loaf in 1942, Breadcraft has strived to provide delicious food and exceed expectations; our team at Cottage Lane are continuing that legacy!

Our people, family & community are our ‘bread & butter’

Breadcraft was founded in the 1940’s by Harold Cockburn, and remains in the family four generations later, with John and Julie-Anne Cockburn at the helm. We’re incredibly lucky to continue ‘feeding’ the passion the Cockburn family has for excellent food and community-focused business through Cottage Lane and our sister brand Rebel Bakehouse.

Fostering a positive and sustainable workplace.
Our region is known for award-winning wine and cuisine; including our own bread! We call ourselves the ‘largest family’ in the region, and have been nurturing the careers of talented locals for generations. Learn more about how we’re growing sustainably and caring for our community below.

Ensuring the highest quality since 1942.
Ours was one of the first bakeries to bring traditional European loaves to New Zealand, and Kiwis quickly fell in love with our master bakers’ artisan sourdough and ciabatta bread! To craft the perfect Sourdough loaf we needed a truly authentic sourdough 'bug', a living fermented culture of flour and water. So, we went all the way to San Francisco to source a strain from a family-run bakery dating back to the 1800s. Since the early 1940’s our loyal team have been feeding our beloved sourdough ‘bug’ daily.

Cottage Lane continues to get creative with the latest baking concepts and technology! Authentic doesn’t have to mean ‘boring’, so our product innovation team is constantly dreaming up and trialling new ways to put tastier, healthier twists on classic bread styles, or craft the ideal custom products for our larger foodservice clients.
